Ancestor Altar does Christmas!
Season of the Past and Present
Want to know how to change your future, then you must understand what the ingredients go into making the future: Past and Present! Tis the season! Fall and winter belong to the ancestors as death is approaching and is at its closest during winter. In some traditions, it is believed that the veil between the living and the dead occurs ONLY during Halloween. I am not a believer of that, as I believe Halloween is just the beginning.
During fall things die; in winter what remains slows down. Humans are forced inside (more than out), though there are always exceptions (and beings including Humans) who do the opposite during fall and winter. In this modern time, it seems that before things slow for winter, it speeds up now to a whirlwind... storm before the calm... with what culture is demanding of us during the three major holidays that occur before winter (or, directly after). The funny dichotomy, is that that the American message of Christmas presses us to: give to others and review our life. With so much happening and being demanded of us, few of us have time for reflection unless we deliberately do not give in to cultural demands (then, we may face family pressure in the form of disappointment and power struggles).
However, for those who are courageous, there is a myriad of traditions to include or replace your current ones. If you would like to know more about those traditions, leave a comment here saying so... Otherwise, we move on to Halloween #2: Day of the Dead.
DAY OF THE DEAD
So, let the children of all ages have their pre-day of the dead holiday, Halloween, and grab up November 2 for you!! Day of the Dead is celebrated in other places than Mexico, but may be known by other names.
Day of the Dead is a celebration of life... the life we have now that enables us to celebrate and the life we have now as a result of the lives of others: those who have died before us. Perhaps the closest holiday American has to Day of the Dead is Memorial Day. As you are very well aware, culturally, the only kind of celebrating that is "acceptable" is flags, flowers, speeches and parades.
Even celebrating the Day of the Dead traditionally is prohibitive for many Americans. First, Day of the Dead decorations are made from what is at hand: paper and suger. For most Americans plastic is what is closest at hand!! Families remain close by each other more in Mexico than in America, so visiting graves of family members on this special day is much easier.
What is an American to do?
Create a dual purpose Halloween graveyard. Use it on Novemeber 2nd to decorate and welcome your ancestors.
Many Halloween decorations (discounted on November 1st) can be painted and decorated in a vibrate Day of the Dead designs.
Go Mini! Create an altar that fits on a lamp table. Purchase ready made gravestones from places like the Dollar Store and put your ancestors names on them!
Create a photo collage of all your passed-on relatives and print it out via the internet at discounted photo print places like Costco, Sam's Club and Walmart. Mount the poster in a shadow box backside leaving the front open like a shelf. You now have place for candles and decorations. Think of it has a shared, indoor grave marker.
Cut flowers are expensive, but fall potted flowers last longer and can be replanted later in your yard. It is a wonderful way to transfer the meaning of this holiday in something that lives on. Even if this flower dies, it becomes apart of the dirt and nourishing compose for plants that come after, similar to the whole idea behind Day of the Dead.
